Cathi Mangione-Moyer
Cathi started piano at 2.5 years old after listening to her mother play. She began in the Catholic Schools but was not satisfied with the instruction so she began lessons with Lois Hammerstrom at 8 years old. This was a good beginning for her because she was able to accomplish Intermediate Level quite quickly.
In 1964, Ms. Hammerstrom had to quit and Cathi began studying with Sigrid Grinius, a prominent teacher that graduated from Tanglewood and then Julliard.
In two short years, Cathi was beginning to enter and win a few of the classes in the Greater Spokane Music Festival and won the Zonta Club Award for the State of Washington in 1968 in which she performed at Washington State University in front of several teachers from around the State.
In the Spring of 1968, she also got a full scholarship to Fort George Wright College of Fine Arts where she continued her studies with Sigrid Grinius and Sister Marietta Coyle,(voice teacher) for Professional Accompanying.
She was beginning to enjoy learning and playing many composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, Chopin, Liszt, Prokofiev and many others. Classes she took were Psychology classes, Montessori School, and Music Theory and other required Music classes
In her 3rd year, she began study at Eastern Washington State because her scholarship had run out and she could only afford EWU. In all, she accomplished 5 years of college classes and earned a B.A. in Piano Performance with an education as secondary.
She began teaching piano when she was 16 years old and after college, continued to teach from that day forward. In 2007, she took Harmony Road and Yamaha School of Music classes to teach at Northwest Academy of Music in Couer d’Alene, Idaho. In 2008, she and her husband moved to San Diego, California where she has continued to teach piano and Voice for their own company, American Music Academy
David and Cathi enjoy having 3-4 recitals per year with their students and love teaching!
